Shantell Martin

Shantell Martin

@shantell_martin

The multi-disciplinary maven is famed for her iconic black-and-white drawings that start with a single line and evolve into a complex landscape of faces, words, and figures. Martin’s large-scale installations have graced the walls of the Oculus, the promenade of the David H. Koch Theater, and the exterior of the historic Our Lady Star of the Sea chapel on Governors Island, among others. Perhaps you’ve seen her brand collaborations, or solo shows, or even one of her improvisational live art performances because in the 11 years since this London-born, Central Saint Martins-educated artist moved to New York City to explore a more traditional art career, she’s certainly made a name for herself by doing the exact opposite of traditional.

SATR

@satrxx

Graffiti-world wunderkind SATR, born Deng Cuixin, has been on a roll for years now, exhibiting her work and fighting graffiti battles across Canada, Europe, South America, and Asia. Born and based in Guangzhou, China, the 24-year-old artist fuses traditional Chinese ink painting modalities with spray-can techniques and a minimal color palette to create a graffiti style all her own. When she’s not utilizing typography for a Cole Haan campaign, SATR’s work is primarily punctuated by majestic animals that explode off a surface, projecting the soft power that defines her oeuvre.

Frank Morrison

@frankmorrison

The intricate work of Frank Morrison becomes even more incredible when it’s revealed that the 49-year-old, Atlanta-based artist is entirely self-taught. What started out as a nascent career of tagging walls with graffiti has evolved into illustrations for more than 20 award-winning children’s books, solo shows, features in festivals like Art Basel, and creating work for Swizz Beats and Jordan Peele’s film Get Out. Among his goals is to leave a memoir of African-American livelihood today, comforting those whose cultures have been forgotten or otherwise usurped. Judging by Morrison’s body of work, that’ll be one compelling, beautiful memoir.

Lauren Tsai

@laurentsai

At just 22 years old, the artist/model/actress has achieved more than most people twice her age. After breaking out with a starring role on awkward Japanese reality TV show Terrace House: Aloha State as an 18-year-old, Tsai’s modeling career was only getting bigger—but she quickly realized that, for her, success meant being an artist. Having acted on that epiphany, Tsai is currently more in tune with her needs than ever, with recent art collaborations that range from Marvel Comics to Marc Jacobs, and another starring role in her pocket, this time as a time-traveling mutant on the FX series Legion. If time tells anything, it’s that Tsai will only continue to find success in whatever she pursues.

Mike Perry

@mikeperrystudio

This is the artist whose mind-bending animation work on Comedy Central’s Broad City won him an Emmy, and whose prolific output seems to be the stuff of creative-industry dreams. His books, zines, sculptures, installations, silkscreens, drawings, paintings, animations, etc, etc, etc keep him so busy, Perry’s had to hire some extra sets of hands for the Brooklyn studio he opened in 2006. Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, the 39-year-old never misses an opportunity to gush over his love for New York City and, specifically, the sense of community he’s found since moving here. Now, the city’s art scene is gushing over him.
